Logan • Legacies are built through success on the basketball court.

What a start for Ridgeline High.

The Riverhawks, in their first year of existence, rode the scoring of seniors Jaxon Brenchley and Theron Wallantine past Juan Diego 89-63 in Saturday's Class 3A boys' basketball state championship game.

"We came out on fire," said Brenchley, a 6-foot-5 senior who will play at the University of Utah.

Brenchley had only seven points in a narrow semifinal win over Desert Hills, but he rang up 31 against the Soaring Eagle as well as grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing nine assists.

"I don't care at all about" point totals," Brenchley said. "If Theron scores 50 and I score 10, that's fine. It's just all about winning."

Riverhawks coach Graydon Buchmiller said, "He'll do what needs to be done. If he needs to get the rebounds, he's our leading rebounder. If he needs to make plays, he's our leading assist guy. He's a gamer and competitor. He's played a long time. Tonight we just got a sample of everything he can do."

Ridgeline (20-4) assumed control with a 19-6 run that started midway through the first quarter. Juan Diego (22-3) stayed within shouting distance through most of the second and was down 35-29 after a 3-pointer from JD Ahlstrom with two minutes before half.

But the Riverhawks closed the half with two buckets by Wallantine and a Landon Brenchley free throw for a 41-29 advantage, and that was a harbinger of more to come.

Wallantine scored a bucket out of the break, part of his 23 points, just before Jaxon Brenchley swished a 3-pointer then sank a layup.

The lead suddenly was 19 points only a minute-and-a-half into the third quarter.

"I really thought it was going to be a dogfight. Going into half, we had a 12-point lead and I was hoping that, if we could continue playing consistently, we'd end up with five- or 10-point win," Wallantine said. "We just kept that surge we had going in the first quarter all the way to the end.

"I had no idea this would have been the outcome. I would've laughed in your face if you would have told me this yesterday."

The teams already had played twice, although not in the same region. Juan Diego beat the Riverhawks by eight in mid-January before falling at Ridgeline by four on Feb. 1.

Juan Diego finished with 13 points from Ahlstrom, while Matt Kitzman and Ignacio Arroyo ended with 11 apiece.

"I think we ran into a team that was really hot, both the way they've been playing the last couple of weeks and, literally, shooting," Soaring Eagle coach Drew Trost said. "It's still a great season. To win 22 games in a high school season is tough to do.

"The seniors had a great run, getting to this game twice," added Trost, who saw his team lose to Dixie last year in the 3A title game. "Unfortunately, we didn't finish, but it's still a great accomplishment."
