Logan • Lost in the two-person star shuffle of twins Monique and Dominique Mills, or so it seemed at the time, was the supporting cast of the the Juan Diego girls' basketball team that went undefeated on its way to the state title in 2015.

But Soaring Eagle players Becca Curran, Anna Ewoniuk and Brynn Drummond all were starters at one time or another on that team two years ago, and the 34-32 win over Richfield only cemented their status as state champion athletes at the Catholic school in Draper.

This one felt a little different though.

"This year was all about us," Ewoniuk said. "When we won sophomore year, everybody was like, 'You guys only won because of the twins, so this year it was really all about us.'"

"We've heard that the past two years: 'You can't do it, you can't do it,'" Drummond said. "Last year, we lost to Cedar [in the quarterfinal round]. We wanted it this year more and we knew we could do it."

Just to clarify, Drummond never thought the game was in the bag against Richfield despite having confidence in her own team.

"I want to say I knew we would do it, but there were moments where it was like, 'Please just go in,'" she said.

Curran was a regular starter and a key contributor at times on that '15 squad. And she did feel like the talen left after the Mills sisters graduated was enough for another championship run.

"I think we knew what we had in us," Curran said. "We knew we had to play more team ball because they [the Mills sisters] were so good, and we had to make up for that.

"I think we play really well together. We just don't have two dominant players."

Juan Diego coach Tim Turpin was an assistant at Spanish Fork during the 2014-15 season, but he soon learned about the Mills sisters and that unbeaten team after getting hired last year.

"They still [talk about them]. That was a great team and that's how it is when you go undefeated and have that kind of success," he said. "I asked our [athletic director], when I came in, what kind of success are you looking for — to go undefeated?

"He said, no, he just wanted us to play well."

Goal completed, and then some, Saturday for the Soaring Eagle.
