An all-Region 6 girls Class 4A state title game is what everyone was expecting, right?

Um, no. But Skyline proved it's more than worthy with a 52-45 semifinal victory over Timpview on Friday night.

Cameron Mooney scored 8 of her 13 points in the first half, and blocked three shots in the second half to propel Skyline (22-4) to the state title game for the second time in three years.

"One of my jobs is to pump people up and get them ready," said Mooney, who also grabbed nine rebounds. "If they're down, I make sure they're coming back. I don't care if I'm scoring or not, I just want the team to win. So whatever I have to do to get there, that's what I'm going to do."

The Eagles will try for their first state title in 10 seasons when they face Judge Memorial at 1 p.m. Saturday. The two teams split their two regular-season matchups.

Both Mooney and Skyline coach Lynette Schroeder noted that Region 6 was perceived as the "worst" in the classification before Judge and Skyline proved otherwise Friday.

"Everyone said we had the weakest region, but here we are," Schroeder said. "Region 6 matching up in the state title game. It's just going to be a battle."

Hannah Anderl had 14 points and Barrett Jessop added 11 for the Eagles, who trailed 35-25 early in the second half. Schroeder called a timeout and the message was received.

Mooney hit a 3-pointer that started a 12-0 Skyline run. Timpview (17-6) committed five of its 14 turnovers in the five-minute stretch, as the teams traded leads into the fourth quarter.

Kealani Neves hit a runner in the lane to knot the score at 41, but the Thunderbirds didn't make another basket until there were 27 seconds left in the game. Neves had a game-high 16 points and was the only Timpview player in double figures.

"I felt we were flat that whole first half," Schroeder said. "We weren't prepared for the tempo that Timpview came out at us with. We had to match that tempo going into the second half if we wanted any chance to win." —
