Logan • Richfield coach Marc Peterson yelled "no" frantically in the overtime of the Class 3A girls' quarterfinals at Utah State University on Thursday evening.

Left alone on the baseline, junior Madisyn Daniels was in the process of rising up for the jumper, but Peterson, knowing the situation, wanted to further drain the clock.

Daniels didn't share the same thought process. And it was a good thing for the Wildcats that she didn't because it proved to be the winning bucket in a 42-40 win over Cedar City to advance to Friday's semifinals.

"Oh my goodness. That's one of those as a coach you're saying, 'No, no — good job,'" Peterson said. "That's how Daniels is. She's a shooter, and when she's got an open shot, we're used to letting her shoot it. She did what's she done all year."

Just as it appeared Richfield was on the verge of opening the flood gates in the third quarter, Cedar City retaliated with an 8-2 run highlighted by triples from Japrix Weaver and Sara Pearson to surge ahead 26-25 with less than a minute remaining in the period.

Caityln Nabity led all scorers with 17 points for Richfield. Emma Jones added 10 points for the Wildcats, while Lindsey Robinson topped Cedar City with 15 points and Maisie Elison scored 11.

"Ever since I was a freshman in high school, we've played Cedar every single year," Nabity said. "We lost my freshman year by 2, my sophomore year by 3, and this year by 2 in double overtime. We just wanted to beat them finally. … It felt so good."

The third quarter was a different pace than the first two quarters, which ended in a 14-14 deadlock. Switching into a college venue with a deeper backdrop affected the shooting for both teams and continued to hamper performances at the free-throw line.

"I think we're one of the better free-throw shooting teams in the state, but tonight wasn't our night," Peterson said.

Richfield finished 8 of 19 from the line and missed all 12 of its 3-point attempts, which allowed Cedar City to even things at 36-36 with 27.1 seconds left on a 3-pointer from Robinson.

"I told the girls we don't have to have it that exciting," Peterson said. "I'd like to win without all that excitement, but it was fun. I'm proud of them."
