Logan • Richfield's supply of late-season magic ran out Thursday as Juan Diego booted the last remaining No. 4-seed from the tournament with an 86-59 victory in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

After scoring two points in their first-round matchup against Pineview, Juan Diego's Steven Price responded with a 10-point first half for the Soaring Eagle as he denied several Richfield comeback runs with his powerful post presence. Price finished with 12.

"He's been a bounce-back kid all year," Juan Diego head coach Drew Trost said. "He's had some tough games where maybe he got in foul trouble early or missed a bunch of shots, but about every single one — the next game he's been big. He's always been a great talent, but he's kind of lacked in maturity. That's been the huge turning point in this senior year, is he's really matured a lot and been able to be mentally tough."

Seniors Stetson Southwick and Jeron Stewart combined to shoot 9-for-15 from the floor in the first half for Richfield, including 5-for-5 on 3-pointers, But eight Wildcat turnovers led to several easy shots for the Soaring Eagle, including a show-time dunk for Price that gave Juan Diego a 42-30 lead at the break.

"It kind of messes with people," Trost said about his team's press defense. "We've got really active hands and guys do a good job of getting deflections. Those are the kinds of things that just wear on you – then all the sudden we just hit you for a four or six-point run. It's kind of deflating for the other team and it's something I like to take advantage of."

Richfield was able to cut the deficit to nine points in the second half, but was unable to get any closer. After Price dominated down low in the first half, junior Jason Ricketts came off the bench in the second half and out-muscled the Wildcat defense for some tough baskets.

"I felt good today," Ricketts said. "I'm used to [fighting through contact], that's the way I play, that's the way I like it."

With six different Juan Diego players finishing in double-digits, Ricketts led the team with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

"We don't care about getting buckets, all I care about is winning," Ricketts said. —
