Taylorsville • Springville got off to a hot start behind its twin towers, Savannah Sumsion and Cheyanne Brown.

The pair wasted no time setting the tone in the Red Devils' 59-44 victory over Kearns in Tuesday's first round of the Class 4A girls' basketball state tournament.

Sumsion led all scorers with 25, including going 13 of 16 from the line, while Brown added 16.

Brown scored 10 consecutive points for Springville in the first quarter.

"She shot very well from the outside, which opens it up," Springville coach Camie Oakey said. "That's the key against zones. Anytime we can get that from Cheyanne, we're happy with it."

It was Sumsion who made the biggest impact, both with her play and her encouragement. Oakey says the senior is a coach on the floor, like when Sumsion kept yelling for her teammates to keep up their hands up on defense. And Sumsion backed up her words with her play. She wasn't afraid to mix it up under the rim, grabbing seven rebounds blocking a pair of shots in the first half.

"Savannah really hit her stride this time of year," Oakey said. "We needed that. She is a really good leader. Sometimes the girls don't like it, but she knows what's she's talking about."

Sumsion credited her teammates for the win. She pointed to senior Kami Warner's play as a key in choking the Cougars' offense.

"She's a hustler, especially on defense," Sumsion said about Warner. "She knows how to make the steal and is absolutely lockdown. I'm lucky to play with some really good teammates."

Mary Fredrickson, who finished with four points, was another role player who earned praise from Sumsion.

"Mary doesn't get the recognition, but she really is the key to our team," Sumsion said. "She scores when we need her to, and she is always making the right plays for us."
