Taylorsville • American Fork came out swinging in its Class 5A girls' basketball state tournament opener Monday, and the Cavemen didn't let up until they advanced to the quarterfinals.

American Fork turned in a dominating performance from buzzer-to-buzzer to down Davis 64-40.

Senior Taylor Moeaki was a threat every time she touched the ball, regardless of the score. Like when she was fouled draining a swooping layup with her team up 15 in the third quarter. She converted the and-1 before she stole the inbound and delivered a crisp pass to Paige Farnsworth outside the arc for a 3-pointer.

"It's always good to have a dominating player like Taylor," teammate Taylor Franson said about Moeaki's six-point run. "Taylor does what she does. She's an amazing scorer, an amazing teammate. It shows every time she gets into the game."

Cavemen coach Corey Clayton made substitutions like a hockey coach, showcasing his team's depth. Sophomore Addy Holmstead maintained the pressure when Moeaki was on the bench, finishing with nine points.

The real star of the game was American Fork's defense. It was relentless. Dominant. Ruthless.

American Fork's bigs — Sydney Bishop and Franson — pestered, swatted and befuddled Davis players attempting to get to the rim. What they didn't block, they gobbled up on the rebound.

"It's so good to have an inside presence from them," Moeaki said. "We need them to have their A-game, and they have been bringing it all season."

The Cavemen advance to face Fremont in Wednesday's 4:10 p.m. quarterfinal. —
