Taylorsville • The state tournament is a stressful environment. The season hangs in the balance each round, which means every mistake is magnified.

That wasn't the case for Fremont in the first round of the Class 5A girls' postseason at Salt Lake Community College on Monday. The young Silver Wolves didn't know they were supposed to be on edge in their 53-45 win over upstart Taylorsville.

"I don't even if they know" how big the stage is, Fremont coach Lisa Dalebout said. "When they're younger, I don't think they know what to expect, so it's not very overwhelming. I don't think they have any expectations, where sometimes seniors mentally get bogged down because they know. It's their last season and there's pressure and they want to go further. Freshmen players especially, they play with a free spirit."

Nine players contributed to the scoring total for Fremont, six of which were underclassmen, including one freshman and one sophomore. The ninth-grader, Haylee Doxey, finished with 10 points, including seven in the first quarter. Senior Berklee Lerohl led the team with 13 points, including a 10-point outburst in the third quarter.

"Not really," said Doxey when asked if she was nervous entering the first postseason game of her high school career, noting she played in the arena for volleyball. "I just don't think about it."

Taylorsville threw multiple looks at Fremont, including a 1-3-1 defensive scheme, but the Wolves adjusted. The game was defined by its physicality, specifically in the post. The Warriors typically run their offense through Morgan Tuluono (17 points) and center Finau Tonga (9 points), so Fremont doubled down on Tonga.

"We did a better job on their post," Dalebout said in reference to the first game against Taylorsville in mid-December, which the Warriors won by two points. "We helped from the weak side early. If Tonga gets the ball on the block, it's really hard to do anything to stop her. I think we did our work before she got the ball on the block."
