Orem • Grand County's defense smothered Rowland Hall in the second quarter, which allowed the Red Devils to take control of their Class 2A boys' basketball state tournament game Saturday.

Grand County limited the Winged Lions to two points in the second quarter on its way to a 64-44 victory at Orem High School. The Red Devils will face Summit Academy in the state quarterfinals.

Rowland Hall actually led by a point after the first quarter. But that's when Grand County's defense clamped down and took a 29-16 lead into halftime.

However, the Red Devils held them to just two points in the second period while scoring 16 themselves and they were up 29-16 at the break. Rowland Hall made a run to close within five points early in the fourth quarter, but the Grand County defense also turned up the heat to earn the lopsided win.

Grand County senior Kenyon Birdwell led the effort with 13 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and a pair of assists.

"Our mission is to execute what we can do as a family," he said. "We scout other teams a bit, but we're more concerned with doing what we do well."

Sophomore Cameron Hoppensteadt added a jolt off the bench in the win. He shot 5 of 7 from the floor and 5 of 6 at the line for 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

"My main role is to make open layups and get rebounds," he said. "If I get the ball in traffic, I pass it out to the other guys." —
