Cedar City • There was plenty of concern among the Cedar City girls' basketball players when their 20-point lead shrunk to single digits Saturday.

But junior Carley Davis helped restore order and keep last year's state runner-up firmly on a return path toward another shot at the title with a 56-33 victory over Logan.

Davis scored 13 points, including a key 3-point play that sparked a 14-0 run over the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to secure Cedar City's fifth consecutive win.

"I told the girls in the timeout, 'You just let them back in the game,' " Cedar coach John Elison said about Logan's run. "They dug down and did just what they needed to."

By the time the fourth-quarter run was finished, Cedar City enjoyed its largest lead of the night at 50-27 and earned a rematch with Richfield at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in Logan.

The teams faced each other on the Wildcats' home floor Jan. 5, and Cedar City came away with a 49-47 win in double overtime.

If there was any nervousness or wavering confidence as the Grizzlies crept closer, Davis and her teammates didn't show it.

"Anyone can come back," she said. "We let off on defense, so we had to come back really hard. Defense wins games, and that was the main key. We calmed down and played our game."

The Grizzlies entered on a three-game winning streak of their own, including one over Region 11 champ Juan Diego, but they were shut out in the first quarter, falling behind 18-0. The deficit hit 20 before Mia Marin hit two free throws two minutes into the second quarter to get the visitors on the board.

Logan (9-13) didn't hit its first field goal until Liz Timmerman nailed a 3-pointer with 3:30 to play in the half.

Cedar City led 36-18 late in the third quarter after Dream Weaver hit a 3-pointer, but Marin answered with two of her own — one from long-range and a conventional and-1 — and Timmerman's running layup fell at the horn to pull the Grizzlies within single digits.

It was Logan's last threat. —
