San Francisco • Having missed Thursday's loss at Pepperdine with an illness, BYU backup center Corbin Kaufusi flew into San Francisco on Friday and was available to play Saturday night against San Francisco.

The Cougars played their second game without starting starter L.J. Rose, who had surgery on Friday to repair of torn meniscus.

Suffice it to say, Rose's absence was noticeable this weekend.

"We miss that guy," guard Nick Emery said. "That dude is a heck of a leader. He knows exactly what to say. He is positive. … Guys get injured, and you've got to adjust. But it is tough. We have LJ's back and we know he has ours, and we are just praying that he has a full recovery and gets back."

Dastrup's big day

Freshman Payton Dastrup played a career-high 12 minutes against Pepperdine on Thursday after playing only 14 total minutes in the eight games before the Cougars lost 99-83 to the Waves. Dastrup scored a career-high five points and made the third 3-pointer of his career.

"Payton has practiced hard all year and deserves an opportunity to play and see what he can do in a game, and I think he's [done] lot of things that we have challenged him to do, and he's been really accountable to all those things," coach Dave Rose said. "We will get him some time and see how it goes."

Guinn gets more time

Junior Davin Guinn, the transfer from UC Riverside, has also seen more minutes lately. Guinn played a career-high 31 minutes against Pepperdine and register eight rebounds and three assists, which were also career highs.

Guinn earned a basketball scholarship last summer, but was prepared to receive an academic scholarship, having worked hard on his grades since returning from a church mission to Mexico.

Briefly

It was Senior Night on the Hilltop as San Francisco played its final home game at War Memorial Gymnasium.
