How does a team celebrate beating the previously unbeaten region leader for its biggest win of the season?

Make a mannequin challenge video in the locker room, of course.

Judge Memorial earned the chance to sit still for a minute or so after handing visiting Skyline its first Region 6 defeat, 57-48 on Friday night.

And as they did on the court, the Bulldogs pulled off the challenge flawlessly.

"I was trying so hard to stay still," said Vanessa Austin, who had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Judge (15-4, 9-2).

The loss kept Skyline (18-4, 10-1) from clinching the region title and ended the Eagles' nine-game win streak. Judge did so by taking fewer chances on defense than it did in the first meeting, a 57-41 Skyline victory last month.

"In that first game, they were running up our backside all night because we were taking chances at three-quarter court," Judge coach Paul Shiramizu said. "Our guards have been successful taking chances, but against Skyline, you can't do that. You have to be a little more disciplined and let them come to us."

Miyalla Tarver scored a game-high 17 points and Mayree Ellis added 12 points, including eight straight for Judge in the fourth quarter as the host team built a 15-point lead and then held on.

Skyline dug itself a hole with poor outside shooting. The Eagles made just 1 of 11 3-point attempts in the first half and finished 4 of 29 from beyond the arc.

Tarver's ball handling against Skyline's full-court press allowed the Bulldogs to maintain the lead late, as did her five free throws in the fourth quarter.

"We knew from the jump we needed to step up," Tarver said. "We did it for our seniors, play strong and stay together."

Madison Grange had 15 points and Kiana Eskelson added 10 off the bench for Skyline, which can clinch the outright region title Monday with a win against Olympus. —
