Provo • Considering the sometimes gargantuan size of the spread between Skyline's boys' and girls' swim teams and the rest of the Class 4A field in recent years, it's hard to imagine that any space is left for anybody else to grab some glory.

But it is possible, and you can take that from the Timpview Thunderbirds on Friday.

Although the T-birds and everyone else is in a familiar position after Day 1 of the state meet, trailing the Eagles in the team standings, Timpview enjoyed its share of success at the BYU pool.

Senior Josh Skabelund fulfilled a dream by donning gold tennis shoes on the podium after winning the 50-yard freestyle in 21.09 seconds.

Skabelund, who finished second in the same event as a sophomore and junior, said the footwear was reserved for this particular moment. It was one made possible when he beat to the wall Skyline's Erick Mosteller with a winning margin of more than a second, a significant spread for the short all-out race.

"My goal, since my freshman year, was to take state in the 50 free," said Skabelund, who also won the 100 backstroke last year and will defend that title Saturday.

Skabelund said he sells custom shoes on the internet. Just before accepting his first-place medal, Skabelund bellowed for someone to throw down his shoes — one at a time — from a 20-foot high platform.

"I've always wanted to wear gold shoes on the podium," he said.

Skabelund and fellow Timpview senior Brigham Harrison, who won the 200 freestyle title, paced the Thunderbirds to third place in the team scores after the first day. Skyline was in the top spot with 126.5 points, followed by Springville (93 points) and Timpview (77) .

The Thunderbirds also got a big win on the girls' side when freshman Rachel Oyler blasted her way to the 50 freestyle title in 23.77, missing a 4A state record by only three-hundredths of a second.

"It was amazing. I always wanted to go 23, and now I've got it," Oyler said. "I'm only a freshman, too, so I can't wait for the next few years."

Other winners included Maple Mountain's Makayla Cazier, who repeated her 2016 win in the 200 individual medley, and Olympus' Talmage Corey in the 200 individual medley.

Then, of course, there was Skyline.

The day actually began with Corner Canyon nipping Skyline in the girls' 200 medley relay. But the Eagles got the first-place points ans the title when the Chargers were disqualified for a racer leaving the block early.

Skyline's boys then won the 200 medley relay, and Eagles sophomore Becca Goodson easily won the 200 freestyle by more than 3 seconds in the third finals race of the day.

Although Skyline was shut out of individual champions the rest of Friday, the Eagles' intentions are clear enough entering the final day of competition.

"We definitely want to win again," Goodson said. —
