Ogden • Ogden junior guard Carson White scored 23 points and played a key role in the final minutes of a 69-66 victory over visiting Highland on Tuesday night.

The Tigers (11-5, 4-3 4A Region 5) outlasted the Rams (9-9, 3-4) in a game that was tight throughout as Ogden's seven-point lead midway through the third quarter was its largest of the night.

"Down the stretch it was definitely a grind," White said. "Neither team could put the ball in the hoop. We were talking during the timeout that it was going to come down to defense, and our defense was going to have to win the game."

With his team clinging to a 67-66 lead following Rams forward Caden Hillborn's three-point play with 23 seconds to play, White grabbed a loose ball after teammate Hunter Clarke missed the front end of a one-and-one.

"[Teammate Keon Berghout] did a great job of tipping the ball out and it was just me in the right spot at the right time," said White.

Fouled immediately, White strolled to the free-throw line with the chance to give his team a three-point cushion with 7.8 seconds left. He calmly converted both.

On the Rams' ensuing rush upcourt, Berghout knocked the ball away from Highland guard Liki Makaui, then collected the loose ball and fired a pass upcourt to Clarke at the other end as time expired.

"We really didn't execute as well," said Highland coach Jim Boyce. "I thought our pressure bugged them a little bit and turned them over a bit at the end. They miss the front end of a one-and-one and we can't come up with the rebound, that kind of takes it out of you. You have no chance of coming back from that."

After Elijah Shelton's three-point play gave Highland a 57-56 lead with 5:11 left in the game, Ogden forward Matt Richardson responded with baskets on two straight possessions. A White basket padded the 62-57 Ogden lead at the 2:47 mark.

With 1:47 to go, Hillborn knocked down a pair of free throws to bring Highland to within 65-63. From there, the teams combined for five consecutive turnovers.

Berghout made a pair of free throws as Ogden regained a 67-63 lead and Hillborn, who scored 17 points, added another three-point play, setting the stage for White's heroics. —
