Provo • The Mountain View girls' basketball team scored seven unanswered points in the final two minutes of a very competitive Region 7 battle at Timpview on Tuesday evening to secure a 55-48 victory and remain undefeated in league play.

As they did the first two times these teams faced off, the Thunderbirds jumped ahead early and led by as many as 12 points in the second quarter, sparked by the inspired floor game of sophomore guard Ella Pope.

However, the Bruins dug in and worked their way back into the game, taking a two-point lead at halftime.

The score went back and forth for the next 14 minutes, with neither team able to create an advantage larger than four points.

It was all tied up at 48 with 1:52 remaining, but Mountain View netted a putback bucket and five of six free throws in the closing stretch to wrap up the win.

The story of the second half for the Bruins was junior forward Skye Lindsay, who scored 13 of her 19 points after the break in a great outing for her.

"I just went out on the court and wanted to give it my all," she said. "My teammates boosted me up and inspired me to go hard."

It was a game in which the usually reliable Bruin guard line was struggling to find the hoop, so Lindsay's work down low was particularly important in the outcome. Once her shots started falling, she was double- and triple-teamed much of the time.

"I practice against hard pressure, and I've been taught not to worry about that," she said.

In addition, she was making points with a variety of attempts that weren't always successful earlier in the season. "I've been trying to focus on taking more kinds of shots so I can be more of an asset for my team," Lindsay said.

As it turns out, Mountain View coach Alexis Kaufusi is Lindsay's pressure during practice. "She goes 1-on-1 against me every day," said the former state MVP and college player.

"Skye's the most powerful post we have," the coach added. "She's been working really hard. What she showed tonight has been there all along, but the guards got her the ball more since their shots weren't falling and she got it going for us."

One of those guards was junior Tahlia White, the team's second-leading scorer. She did finally end up with 11 points, but she also had 12 rebounds with multiple steals and deflections to contribute to the hard-earned victory.

"When I'm not scoring, I know I have to keep up the fight," White said. "I just have to keep doing the little things like rebounding and defending.

"It's frustrating when your shots won't go down and there are times I want to quit," the player admitted. "But then I look at the girls next to me, and I want to fight for them and for our coaches."

"That's why she was voted a captain," Kaufusi said. "She recognizes when her shot isn't falling and picks up other parts of her game to facilitate the team instead." —
