The debut of Utah freshman Missy Reinstadtler had a shaky beginning when she fell on her vault attempt Friday.

But rather than pull her from the rest of the lineups, the Utes stuck with her. Turns out, it was the right call.

Reinstadtler finished with a clutch performance of 9.85 on the balance beam and a 9.875 on the floor, helping the Utes score a 197.625 and remain undefeated.

On Monday, Utah co-coach Megan Marsden was still gushing about the performance.

"There are a lot of gymnasts who grow through a season, but in my mind, Missy became a star in an hour and a half," Marsden said. "I felt after vault it may take her a while to get comfortable, but I didn't know it was only going to take an hour and a half."

Reinstadtler is expected to remain in the lineup on all three events when the Utes compete at Washington on Saturday. She is also listed as the alternate on the uneven bars.

A former two-time Olympic junior national champion, Reinstadtler is expected to be one of the leaders for the Utes in the future, if not this year.

Marsden is confident she has what it takes to fill those expectations, particularly after she landed her vault short and scored just 9.225, but then came back with the big beam performance after teammate MaKenna Merrell fell.

"You could see she is a fighter," Marsden said. "We saw her come into her own, really through the course of a meet."

Lineup fiddling

The Utes used sophomore transfer Macey Roberts as the leadoff on the floor on Friday. The former Maryland gymnast delivered with a 9.825.

Utah co-coach Tom Farden called Roberts a "spark plug," but he left the door open as to whether Roberts will remain in that spot or move deeper into the lineup.

"She did a fantastic job, but it's too early to say," he said. "We have Kim [Tessen] and Missy [Reinstadtler] for floor as well so we have some depth to work with. We will exhibition other people to get them experience and keep working through it."

Roberts scored 9.85 and 9.825 in her previous appearances.

In the rankings

The Utes moved up a spot to No. 4 with a 197.05 average while Oklahoma maintained the top spot with a 197.9 average.

Notable was the presence of Southern Utah, which debuted No. 9 with a 196.15 mark following its season-opening 196.15-194.15 win over Stanford.

Individually, Utah's MyKayla Skinner is ranked second in the all-around with a 39.642 average while senior Baely Rowe is third with a 39.625 average.

Skinner is also fourth on the vault (9.925), ninth on the uneven bars (9.892) and second on the floor (9.942). Rowe is fifth on the balance beam (9.9).

On the move

Sabrina Schwab, who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in practice last week, will travel with the team this weekend for the Utes' meet at Washington.

Marsden said she felt it was important that Schwab continue to be a part of the team.

"We have 12 members of this team and we want her there," Marsden said.

Schwab will have surgery to repair the torn ligament in 2-4 weeks when the swelling has gone down, Marsden said. —
