Draper • When it looked as though Juan Diego's five-game winning streak and unbeaten Region 11 record were going to fall by the wayside, the Soaring Eagle girls found a way to rally.

Becca Curran led Juan Diego back from a seven-point deficit in the final minute as the home team forced overtime, then scored a 54-49 victory over Ridgeline on Tuesday night.

The Soaring Eagle were outscored 14-1 to begin the fourth quarter. They did not score a field goal in the quarter until Curran hit a 3-pointer with 50 seconds left to start an improbable comeback.

After a Riverhawk turnover, Brynn Drummond hit another 3-pointer. Ridgeline turned the ball over again and Curran scored off an offensive rebound for a 43-42 lead with 10 seconds remaining.

The Soaring Eagle needed to survive a scare, though. Ridgeline's Sophia Wright was fouled with six seconds to play, but went 1 for 2 at the free throw line to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Juan Diego prevailed in overtime as Curran completed a 20-point night with three free throws, Trista Vawdry added two field goals and Drummond hit three free throws.

"We just had a burst of energy," said Curran, who scored the game's first eight points. "We did not want to lose our winning streak and our region position."

Juan Diego coach Tim Turpin said frustrating shooting nearly cost his team the win.

"I knew we had a good enough team to come back and had kids who were resilient, but we were in a bad spot," he said. "We missed a lot of layups. When you leave those out there, it leaves the door open."

Ridgeline coach Ainsli Jenks, whose team was led by Wright with 15 points, thought her team had the upset.

"Defensively, we kind of shut down there in regulation," she said. "We forgot we had to play defense. We got a little too excited. Our girls are fighters. This was a great girls' basketball game."
