West Jordan • Stockton Shorts knew it was good the second it left his hand. Great shooters always do.

Copper Hills' senior guard splashed his game-high 34th point of the evening with 4.2 seconds remaining in overtime to help his third-ranked Grizzlies upset No. 1 Bingham, 59-57, and break a four-game losing streak to the Miners in the process.

"I knew it was in," Shorts said. "I was feeling it all game, and I just happened to get the open shot and made it."

Added Copper Hills coach Andrew Blanchard on Shorts: "Just a gamer. I think people need to start taking note, not just state guys here, but outside in other colleges. He's phenomenal."

The Grizzlies (9-3, 1-0) led 13-12 after the first quarter. Shorts scored all 13 points in the quarter. His layup with 4:21 remaining until halftime provided Copper Hills with a 20-14 cushion.

That's when Bingham (9-3, 0-1) switched to a five-guard lineup and went on a 13-4 run, fueled by two 3-pointers by Preston Fowlkes, for a 27-24 lead at intermission.

The second half was even throughout and the teams ended regulation in a 46-46 deadlock.

In overtime, Callahan Blackham connected on his first field goal of the game, a corner 3-pointer, to give Copper Hills a 54-53 lead with less than two minutes remaining before Bingham's Branden Carlson threw down a two-handed dunk off a great dish from Brayden Cosper.

Shorts scored on the ensuing possession, but Cosper followed for the 57-56 advantage, setting up Shorts' eventual game-winner with 4.2 seconds.

Bingham had an opportunity to either force double overtime or win, but Copper Hills was whistled for an off-ball foul. Bingham missed the first free throw with 0.1 seconds left and was called for a lane violation on the second attempt.

"That felt pretty good," Blanchard said. "Two good teams just playing their tails off. To be able to come out with a home victory, in overtime, against a rival school. Nothing better than that."
