Sandy • Nothing takes the starch out of an upset bid like an 11-0 run — and that's what Lone Peak's boys' basketball team did Wednesday to hold off Jordan 58-45 on the Beetdiggers' home court.

Lone Peak junior Steven Ashworth said it wasn't an entirely satisfactory night for the victors.

"I don't think we came out with enough energy to be a state championship team," said Ashworth, who finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. "Region's coming up, so hopefully we can come out as a team and support one another."

Lone Peak (6-3) starts its Region 4 schedule on Tuesday at Herriman. The Knights' last action before Wednesday was before Christmas at the Tarkanian Classic in Nevada, where Lone Peak beat George Washington High School from Denver before falling to Sheldon (Sacramento, Calif.,) in the bracket championship game.

Against Jordan (8-3), Lone Peak trailed 23-22 in the third period when Max McGrath got open under the hoop for a score. That triggered the 11-point stretch for the Knights, in which Ashworth and fellow guard Chantry Ross were able to penetrate into the lane for baskets or assists.

Nate Harkness, who finished with a game-high 19 points, made a 3-pointer with 4:29 left in the quarter to finish the run and give the visitors a 33-23 advantage.

"I think we sped up the game, made a couple of good defensive stops," Lone Peak coach David Evans said. "But we never really got in a full rhythm tonight. We've got a couple of things we've got to figure out."

"It was kind of different. We didn't have that JV game to come and watch," Ashworth said. "It was a little bit different kind of atmosphere, but you've got to be ready to play when you get on the court."

Jordan cut the lead down to seven points multiple times in the fourth quarter.

Led by Cameron Blunch's 14 points, the last such instance for the Beetdiggers came with 2:38 left, when Indy Hanson scored off a Lone Peak turnover. But Harkness broke loose for a fast-break layup with 2:02 remaining, followed by two Ashworth free throws, to stop the hosts' last hope.

It was also the last non-region contest for Jordan, which plays host to Cottonwood on Friday.

"Out of 32 minutes, we were good for about 27 minutes," Jordan coach Trace Bevell said. "Coming out of halftime, we struggled. I think we can compete, we just need to keep competing." —
