Riverton • If great guard play is critical to basketball tournament success, then Dixie looks like a solid favorite to repeat as Class 3A champ here in a couple of months or so.

The Flyers certainly had a good time at the Riverton tourney over the last four days, taking the championship with a 66-46 victory over the host Silverwolves on New Year's Eve.

Kaden Elzy, T.Y. Curtis, Kannen Dye and Korbyn Elzy did their usual job, breaking down the Riverton defense off the driblble and making forays into the lane.

And then another guard, one who didn't even score a point in Dixie's win over Kearns in the semifinals, came off the bench and knocked down six 3-pointers. That was Camden Flinders, a recent move-in from Colorado, who led all players with 20 points.

"We're really proud of him. He's part of our puzzle — and we have a lot of pieces," said Dixie coach Ryan Cuff, whose team extended its winning streak to 22 games dating to last season.

"He [Flinders] was just game ready, and it's just nice to know that we can count on a guy like that," Cuff added.

Riverton (6-5), which knocked off Wasatch in a Friday semifinal, was paced by Brock Anderson's 12 points. But the Silverwolves played from behind from the outset as Dixie (13-0) jumped to a 9-2 lead when Dye and Kaden Elzy scored consecutive fast-break layups two minutes into the game.

The Elzy brothers combined to score 23 points, Kaden with 12 and Korbyn with 11, while 6-foot-8 Flyers' post Richard Guymon — the tournament MVP — added eight.

"I've known all of these guys for years, but I'm still really amazed at some of the things they can do," Guymon said. "They all have a really good IQ and we play well together, so I trust them to score it themselves or, if I'm open, they'll find me."

The Silverwolves, who trailed 31-13 at half, made a run to get within single digits in the third quarter. Anderson, who had scored 28 in the semifinal round, hit a bucket midway through the period to make the score 34-25 — but that was immediately answered by a 3-pointer by Sam Stewart for Dixie.

That was followed by an exchange of treys, with Riverton's Ben Neilson getting one and Flinders answering with his fourth of the game, to put the Flyers up 40-28. Flinders then swished another one for a 15-point lead and the visitors were never threatened again.

"It was tough to finish that way and feel really good, but I also know how good that team is," said Riverton coach Skyler Wilson said. "I have a lot of respect for them and there's a reason they were state champs last year.

"They have good guards, they have a good big guy and they're well-coached," he added. "They're just tough to play." —
