Holladay • Before the calendar even turns to 2017, Judge Memorial's players are thinking about how to get into the postseason.

Judge is honing its play at the Utah Autism Foundation Classic this week. After losing to Grantsville on Wednesday to start the round-robin tournament at Olympus, the Bulldogs won its second game in the event, beating Park City 52-41 on Thursday.

"We're in a rebuilding process right now, new coach (Tim Gardner) and everything," Bulldogs senior Alan Lang said. "Right now, we're just meshing it all together and we're going to be ready for region.

"I feel like we have a high ceiling and a lot of room for improvement," Lang added. "I feel like we will make a run for a state championship — make a run in the tournament."

Almost all of the scoring and rebounding production for Judge Memorial (5-4) against the Miners came from the starters. Lang had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and 6-foot-5 senior Nate Maudlin tallied 15 points and seven boards.

Long and lean in the middle, the Bulldogs stood in contrast to the post players for Park City (3-7). While Miners' big men Spencer and Collin Zur battled in the paint, the taller Judge players — like junior Parker Edgington, who had 12 points and 13 rebounds — were able to consistenly convert near the hoop.

"They're big and physical," the 6-foot-7 Lang said of Park City. "They're athletes and it's always fun to compete against players like that."

Jack Lecher led the Miners with 17 points. His jumper with 2:35 left in the first quarter broke an early shooting drought Thursday to make the score 10-5 for Judge.

At the beginning of the second period, it was only a two-point contest after a basket by Park City's Chase Preston. But the Bulldogs scored the next seven points and the Miners wouldn't come that close again.

"We're struggling, but it's fun to get out here and play," said Park City coach Michael Doleac, whose team lost to Skyline to start the tournament on Wednesday.

Judge Memorial and Park City will play the same opponent today at Olympus; Desert Hills will play two games in one day before heading home to St. George.

"We have trouble making shots and then confidence goes downhill," said Doleac. "I was pretty happy with the way Jack Lecher played today. I sat him early after some turnovers, but the second half he came back and played a lot. Defensively, I thought he did a good job. And that's what we're going to have to be — we're going to have to finish out every single play and block out every single time." —
