Holladay • Entering the first day — the first game, for that matter — of the Olympus boys' basketball invitational on Wednesday, both Jordan and Timpanogos had the same disadvantage — if you look at it that way.

The Beetdiggers and Timberwolves each had five days of rest mandated by the Utah High School Activities Association in the form of a practice moratorium required of all member schools.

Still, neither team looked very rusty, particularly Jordan senior Cameron Blunck.

Finishing with a game-high 23 points, Blunck's last three came when his long-ball trey swished through the net as time expired in a Beetdiggers' 68-65 victory.

"He got a wide-open look and he knocked it down," Jordan coach Trace Bevell said. "He missed his free throws, so it's a good thing."

From the end of the first quarter to midway through the fourth, the largest lead for either team was only four points. Although Jordan (7-1) often had the advantage, the 'Diggers finally seemed to grab some cushion when baskets by Josh Christensen and Crew Wakley extended a 1-point edge to six with 5:11 remaining.

But Wakley and Blunck both missed initial shots in one-and-one free-throw opportunities in the last 1:03 of the game and Timpanogos (6-3) clawed back.

With 46 seconds to go, Dalten Stewart made a basket and an ensuing free throw to make the score 65-63. The bucket to tie the game, at the 0:26 mark, came on a putback by Jacob Maddox.

Matt Norman led the Timberwolves with 19 points, while Stewart and Maddox added 18 and 13, respectively.

After Maddox's last make, Bevell opted to let his team run its offense without calling a timeout. Blunck, who had made five other 3-pointers in the game, came free on the right side of the arc in the last few seconds.

"It was call a timeout [and] let the defense set or just go with it," Bevell said. "You know, we weren't going to lose. The worst that was going to happen was go to overtime.

"It was actually in our favor," he added. "We just made a shot when we had to."

In addition to Blunck's output, Indy Hanson had a dozen points for Jordan while 6-foot-5 freshman Dyson Koehler added 10.

Timpanogos applied a full-court press and then continued pressure in Jordan's half-court offense — at least through the first half of the game.

"I'd like to play a little faster. We went zone there in the second half and I think it hurt our tempo on offense," T-Wolves coach Izzy Ingle said. "I don't like taking the foot off the gas, but we took it off today."

The Olympus invite features 12 teams and a round-robin format that will conclude on Saturday. —
