Pleasant Grove • A pair of clutch free throws by Pleasant Grove sophomore guard Casey Brown with seconds left in overtime gave the Viking boys' basketball team the victory against Springville 61-59 Friday night.

Pleasant Grove led most of the game but could never quite put the Red Devils away. The Vikings (6-0) were up by seven with 4:28 left to play in regulation but Springville's hustle and a pair of charity shots from senior center Andrew Slack brought on the extra stanza.

Pleasant Grove was ahead most of the way in the overtime period, courtesy of solid performances from Brown and sophomore center Matthew Van Komen, who led all scorers with 19 and 23 points, respectively.

Springville senior guard Josh Elison, who'd had an uncharacteristically quiet night to that point, scored nine of his team's 12 points in overtime to give the Devils (5-2) a chance.

His contributions included a rare four-point play with 16 seconds remaining. Elison was fouled after releasing a 3-pointer and converted on the extra try to tie the score at 59 before Brown's free throws secured the win for the hosts.

Slack worked hard against Van Komen in the paint to earn his team-high 17 points.

Junior guard Ben Schreiner added 12 points and Ellison 11 for the visitors.

"That was a really fun game," said Viking coach Randy McAllister. "I'd heard some talk about Springville and they have a really good team this year. They'll make some noise in 4A."

When the coach approached his players after the end of regulation, he took some advice from assistant coach Lynn Anderson.

"I told them to relax and just play ball," McAllister said. "This was one of those games that you want in the preseason, putting yourself in tough situations. Our underclassmen got a great education tonight.

"So much that was positive happened in this game that will help us down the road when region play starts." —
