Spanish Fork • The Maple Mountain girls basketball team played a solid all-around game to knock off previously-unbeaten Mountain View 60-54 in a home contest Wednesday night.

The Golden Eagles got off to a hot start using good ball movement and jumped ahead 14-3 in the first four minutes before the Bruins started to work themselves into the game.

Maple Mountain led 19-13 at the end of the first quarter and 28-23 at the break. However, with 3:40 left in the third, senior guard Chantel Riley took a pass from senior guard Kayla Sujeta and sank a 3-pointer to knot the score at 32-32.

Mountain View sophomore guard Lavender Briggs then netted eight straight points to end the period, pushing her team to its biggest lead of 40-37 entering the fourth quarter.

The Eagles responded with successive triples from senior guard Lily Jex, sophomore guard Maddie Eaton and senior guard Nicole Heyn to move back in front 48-42 with 5:37 left to play.

The margin reached nine points, but the Bruins kept working to reduce the deficit and got within three points with 26 seconds left.

However, Heyn and Jex each sank a pair of free throws down the stretch to secure the win for the home squad.

Briggs finished with 16 points for the visitors, while sophomore forward Danja Stafford scored 12 and junior guard Tahlia White had 10. Junior forward Skye Lindsay worked hard in the paint on both ends of the floor.

Heyn led all scorers with 17 points, Eaton contributed 15 and Jex had 12 to add to her impressive floor game for Maple Mountain.

"We needed that one badly," said Eagles coach Cory Green. "We haven't been playing up to our ability, so these last couple of practices, we've been focusing on fundamentals and our expectations from a teamwork standpoint."

Green explained that earlier contests had been polar opposites and the squad wasn't playing team ball.

"Our whole purpose tonight was to come together as a team," the coach said. "I thought every girl who played today filled her role, and that's the type of team we need to be to have success." —
