On paper, the University of Utah's game against little Concordia of Oregon on Tuesday night looked like a mismatch.

In reality, it was worse.

Senior Lorenzo Bonam scored 17 points and sophomore Parker Van Dyke added 15, leading the Utes to a cruise-control 96-53 victory over the Division II Cavaliers at the Huntsman Center.

Junior JoJo Zamora added 14 points for Utah, which dominated Concordia as coach Larry Krystkowiak used 12 players. Nobody played more than 23 minutes. Everybody played at least eight. Eleven of the 12 scored.

Despite the lopsided nature of the game, Krystkowiak thought the Utes showed improvement from their season-opening 81-37 rout of Northwest Nazarene.

"It was good," he said. "We fixed a few things that were broken in the last game. It's just part of the process, early on."

Van Dyke, who had five points on 2-for-7 shooting against Northwest Nazarene, agreed.

"I think what we learned is how to make adjustments," he said. "The first game, we won by 40-some points but there were a lot of things we needed to work on. So we came back and tried to make adjustments — getting better every game, finishing every possession. Those are the things the coaches emphasized."

Because he's working with a young team which has limited experience, Krystkowiak defended opening a new season against two overmatched opponents.

"Each year is different," he said. "It's really about what you are ready to jump into. … With our team, there needs to be a sense of confidence. You don't want to get pummeled. That can be pretty dangerous. So you do what you think is best."

Saying there's not going to be a better conference in the country than the Pac-12, Krystkowiak added, "That's the key for us, trying to get firing on all cylinders in league play."

Continuing a season-opening seven-game home stand against Concordia, Utah started a bit slowly. The Cavaliers' Latrell Wilson buried a 3-pointer to tie it at 7 with 16:50 remaining the in first half.

Moments later, however, Utah started playing more aggressively on defense. The pressure forced the Cavs into a faster pace and the Utes' superior skill took over. Bonham went to the basket and scored with 12:28 left in the half, triggering a 10-0 run.

When Devon Daniels broke free and scored another layup five minutes later, he capped a 19-2 blitz that gave Utah a 32-11 lead.

During the lopsided stretched, the Utes converted 10 of 12 offensive possessions. Junior forward Tyler Rawson had six points during the run.

"Tyler," Krystkowiak said, "does a good job with his back to the basket."

By halftime, the Utes enjoyed a 45-21 advantage.

Eight of the 10 Utah players who had already gotten into the game scored, led by Kyle Kuzma with 11. He poured in seven points in the final 2:11, including an off-balance 12-footer with one second remaining.

"I like our team," Krystkowiak said. "I like working with our guys. We'll have a chance, if we stay together."
