Provo • BYU's basketball program expects to sign two prospects to National Letters of Intent this week after the early signing period for basketball began on Wednesday, but as of 5 p.m. Thursday only Idaho forward Kolby Lee had sent in the official document. The Cougars are apparently still waiting on the other high school star who committed to coach Dave Rose last summer, Las Vegas guard Christian Popoola.

Lee committed on Aug. 22. The 6-foot-9 forward plays at Rocky Mountain High in Meridian, Idaho, and averaged 14.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game last season for coach Dane Roy. He led the Grizzlies to a 19-7 record and was selected to participate in the 2016 NBPA Top 100 High School Camp in Charlottesville, Va., last spring.

Lee plans to go on an LDS Church mission when he graduates from high school next spring and will be a freshman at BYU in 2019-20, according to a school news release.

"Kolby will be a great addition to our program," Rose said. "He will add size, athleticism and skill to our frontline. We're excited that Kolby will be a part of the future of BYU basketball."

Lee was named to the 5A All-Idaho Second Team by the Idaho Statesman. He was also recruited by Utah State, Boise State, Richmond, Portland, Kent State, DePaul and UC Davis.

Popoola is a 6-3, 180-pound guard at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, and committed to BYU on Aug. 3. He played at Lone Peak High in Utah his sophomore year with Duke freshman Frank Jackson. ESPN.com rates him as a three-star player and the fourth-best prospect in the state of Nevada.
