Timpview found composure when it mattered most throughout the team's playoff run, toppling No. 1 seeded Bonneville and last year's 4A champion Skyline en route to a state title game matchup with East.

But when a pinpoint pass found the feet of Timpview freshman Lily Haskins, she found a reservoir of composure most first-year players would never tap.

Haskins drove the pass from senior Dakota Smith low and found the back of the net, breaking the deadlock with East in the 46th minute to help secure Timpview's first-ever girls' soccer title in a 2-0 win at Rio Tinto Stadium on Friday night.

"It was crazy," Haskins said. "I just can't believe the ball went in. … When I saw it go in, I was filled with joy."

Timpview coach Eric Brady said he prevented Haskins from shooting with her laces in a game earlier in the season — shots that are tougher to control than shooting with the instep — saying the freshman looked like she "had one leg" when her preferred shooting option was taken away.

After she buried the goal Friday, Brady said the specialized training had paid off.

"All that's just working together, coach and player, the whole year to learn discipline. That's been our whole theme," Brady said. "That was a disciplined finish out of a freshman that has been working so hard."

The entire match was a display of contrasting styles overall, Timpview trying long passes from the back to spring Smith free to charge toward the box. East (13-5-2) played more methodically, emphasizing possession and flowing offensively through the left wing and technically sound senior Haley Farrar.

After the opening goal, East settled in and began pressuring the Timpview defense. In the 57th minute, Farrar found herself alone on the right side of Timpview's box and sailed a shot just over the bar.

But in the 69th minute, Timpview (16-4-1) found another opening, Smith dragging a low cross across the face of goal that was mishandled by East's goalkeeper. The resulting loose ball was tapped in by junior Alyssa Spackman to extend Timpview's lead to 2-0.

Spackman said her goal relieved some of East's pressure on Timpview's defense, allowing the Thunderbirds to relax slightly.

"A 1-0 game is really scary because at any time, they can get a fluke goal," she said. "When it was 2-0 it really sealed the deal for us."

Brady said Timpview's playoff gauntlet helped the team "dig deep and work through the bad spots" that East presented.

"No one has played us harder this entire year. All the respect for that team," the coach said. "Not only did they play hard, they played smart. They're really on the ball, we were chasing them the whole game. Usually it's the opposite."

Brady said composure was paramount for his team this season: a freshman's composure to score in the biggest moment of her young career, composure to weather a brutal postseason schedule and composure in a gritty championship game to bring a title home for the first time to Timpview's trophy case.

"These girls will have a memory later in life to dig deep from and say 'I can do hard things, I can do great things,' " Brady said. "That's what it means to me."
