Layton • Final game of the regular season, playoff spot and region title on the line, against your rival in overtime. It doesn't get any more dramatic than that.

With three yards separating Davis and Layton from a share of the Region 2 title, the Dart defense stuffed Lancer quarterback Tayler Katoa on the game-ending two-point conversion attempt to hold on for a 31-30 road victory.

"That's high school football at its best right there," Davis coach Tyler Gladwell said. "Plays being made by both teams, players making plays in big-time moments, both coaching staffs making big calls for their teams — that's what it's all about. It's a lot of fun, and it's great to be on this side of it."

After a back-and-forth first half that had both teams heading into the break tied at 14, Layton seemed to take control in the third quarter when a Braxton Gold interception eventually led to Katoa's second rushing touchdown of the game and a 21-14 lead.

After a couple of disappointing drives in the second half, Davis quarterback Jake Emery and tailback Riley Smith began to dominate in the fourth quarter. The big-chunk yardage gained by Smith on the ground, combined with some timely running and passing from Emery, put Davis back on top late in the quarter when Smith scored his second rushing touchdown of the night with 1:43 remaining.

But, the Darts would be in for another tight region contest when Layton kicker Harrison Walker sent the game to overtime with a 32-yard field goal with seconds remaining in regulation.

Getting the ball first in overtime, Emery and Smith continued to dominate the running game, which led to Smith's third touchdown on the night to give the Darts a 31-24 lead.

After Katoa steamrolled his way into the end zone for his third rushing touchdown, the Layton offense stayed on the field to try and clinch their first playoff berth since 2013. But, it wasn't meant to be for the Lancers, as the Davis defense got a great push on the line of scrimmage and stuffed Katoa to improve to 7-3 on the season and earn a piece of the school's 31st region title.

"We have great tradition. Year in and year out, we get great kids who work extremely hard, that buy into 'the team is the most important part,' " Gladwell said. It's not about individuals, it's about the team and this group is no different. Tonight was one of those nights when we needed to stick together, and we were able to do that."

Smith finished with 213 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

"I'm happy as ever," Smith said. "Our O-line just stuck through it the entire game. Sometimes we went three-and-out, but throughout the game they fought and we found I way to win. I love them. It was win or go home." —
