Much like the first meeting of the teams earlier this season, No. 2 seed Juan Diego scored early and never let up, beating No. 3 seed Cedar City 4-0 in the first round of the Class 3A girls soccer state tournament on Wednesday.

Juan Diego senior AnnaMarie Digeronio converted from the penalty spot for an early 1-0 lead. Juan Diego doubled its lead in the 10th minute, when sophomore Daviana Vaka got free in front of the goal and headed a loose ball home.

The fast start by Juan Diego allowed for the defense to relax, while the offense continued to apply the pressure on Cedar City.

"Usually, from a psychological aspect, getting those goals early makes a tremendous difference. It takes a lot of patience and scoring quick. It's important to pressure high and take advantage of the chances you are given," said Juan Diego coach Myriah Fankhauser.

Juan Diego never let up and in the 13th minute, Vaka scored her second goal of the game — her 22nd of the season — this time finding herself on the receiving end of a Heaven Kelley cross. Vaka chested the ball into the back of the net as Juan Diego started to pull away.

Aside from a couple of corner kick chances, Cedar City's best opportunity came midway through the second half when sophomore Tasha Kamachi put the ball past the goalkeeper, but was called for being offsides.

Near the end of the game, Kelley scored from 15 yards out to seal the deal for Juan Diego.

"We were very technical on the ball. We applied a lot of high pressure. We penetrated well and finished our opportunities," said Fankhauser.

This was the sixth shutout this season for Juan Diego, which advances to the quarterfinals to face Park City at 1 p.m. Saturday. Park City beat Richfield to advance.
