Provo • Corner Canyon needed a win in the worst possible way, and was facing a tough opponent to get a win against.

But the Chargers jumped out to a 16-0 lead and held on from there, upsetting third-ranked Timpview 19-10 in a key Class 4A Region 7 game on Friday night.

"We did some stuff that we normally don't do, which is play zone defense. We're normally a heavy man team and a heavy blitz team. They kind of burned us with that last year. We went into this think we were going to blitz a lot. I think it was great plan and it worked really well for us. Overall we were able to keep their big players in check," said Corner Canyon head coach Donald Eck.

After a safety gave Corner Canyon a 2-0 lead, the Chargers (5-3) quickly added to their lead when quarterback Zach Wilson found tight end Adam Chandler for a 6-yard touchdown pass and 9-0 lead, which remained the margin at halftime. The Chargers then made it 16-0 to start the second half on a 52-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to Colten Lawson.

Timpview (6-2) would start to mount a comeback behind the arm of quarterback Jordan Mariteragi, who replaced Jacob Biggs to start the second half. Mariteragi connected with Noah Anderberg for a 14-yard touchdown to get Timpview on the board. The hosts then added a field goal to narrow the deficit to 16-10.

But the Chargers defense stood strong the rest of the game and added a late 20-yard field goal by Connor Ebeling to complete the scoring.

"Our secondary was great, our pass rush was really good and overall our defense was really great," Eck said. "This is a huge victory for us. We needed this to stay in the region hunt and to get into the playoffs. We had to win it. With a program like Timpview, it doesn't matter where you're at, it's always a huge win."
