Highland • The Pleasant Grove Vikings came into their girls' volleyball match against Lone Peak with a national reputation, but it was the Knights who took away a 25-18, 25-17, 17-25, 25-23 victory.

"Anytime Lone Peak and Pleasant Grove get together to play some volleyball, it's going to get pretty intense with high energy," said Lone Peak coach Reed Carlson. "Lucky for us, it was our home floor. I think that always helps a little bit to get the match started."

Lone Peak (10-3) was led by sophomore Tasia Farmer, who finished with 11 kills, and Madi Robinson, who contributed 10 kills and five aces. The Knights blitzed their way to an 8-0 start behind the hitting of Farmer and the serving of Kacie Huntsman.

Pleasant Grove (14-3) attempted to rally and cut the margin to two at 18-16, but early service errors were costly; The Vikings committed five errors in each of the first two sets while Lone Peak used blistering serves from Robinson to pull away for the opening set.

Lone Peak pulled away in the middle of the second set as Robinson — with an unusually high ball toss — served three aces in a row.

"We've been working on our ball control and hitting selection to help our hitters see the floor better," said Carlson, who is in his first year coaching at Lone Peak. "To swing high and around blocks. The girls did a phenomenal job and our setters [Jaquelyn Langhaim and Huntsman] keyed in on the right hitters.

Kazna Tarawhiti's 11 kills and Heather Gneiting's eight kills led Pleasant Grove. The Vikings took the third set and led 22-19 in the fourth before a couple of errors brought Lone Peak back to within a point and a Langham kill tied the score.

Tied at 23, a Robinson spike brought match point and a combined block of Gneiting by Kennedi Boyd and Robinson finished the contest for Lone Peak. -
