South Jordan • As far as the flow of the game, the participants on both sides of Tuesday afternoon's Bingham-Copper Hills girls soccer game didn't really see a huge difference from the teams' first meeting at the beginning of the month.

But the scoring summary sure told a different story, and it was a lot shorter to read.

Bingham (8-2-3, 6-2-1) won the rematch by a 1-0 count to hand Copper Hills (10-4, 9-1) its first loss in Region 3 play.

The Grizzlies won the first meeting of the season 3-0 on Sept. 1.

This time, the scoring came down to a single sequence five minutes into the contest.

A corner kick by the Miners' junior Baylie Saunders was headed cleanly by Bingham sophomore Emily Song and the ball got past Grizzlies' goalkeeper McCaslin Davis for the only goal of the day.

"I felt my girls mentally came prepared for this game and they played a full 80-minute game," Bingham coach Tennille Vance said. "Copper Hills is a great team, so we knew it would come down to a free kick, a PK or corners.

"That's what we emphasized and we capitalized in the first half," Vance said. "Our ultimate goal is to put as much pressure on the goal and get as many corners as we can."

Song's score held up.

In the second half, the Grizz had 12 shots — half on goal — without finding the net.

Bingham's offense helped keep Copper Hills away from the net by occasionally pushing forward for scoring chances in the last 15 minutes. And the Miners' defense mostly kept the visitors from having clean opportunities.

"[Keeper] Danielle Orr was phenomenal and our defense had a solid game as well," Vance said. "They have fantastic forwards and I felt our defense was mentally ready and they anticipated most of the balls."

The Bingham coach credited players like senior Jantzee Anderson, sophomore Shelby Keating and junior Kamree Jones for keeping the defensive clamps on the Grizzlies.

Anderson was injured, a torn MCL, in the first meeting with Copper Hills on Sept. 1 and this was her first game back.

"I've been out for a while. This has been on my mind 24-7," said Anderson of her left knee. "It's still in a lot of pain, but I can play through it.

"Last game, we came in super anxious," she added. "This time, we said we were going to have a positive mindset. There wasn't any difference in plays, or difference in positions — it was all our mindset."

Copper Hills still has a clear path to the region title, particularly if it beats Brighton in its next contest on Thursday.

"This game kind of had the same feel as the last one, to be honest. Both teams just went out and played really hard," Grizzlies' coach Ryan Rumfallo said. "They went out and got the goal off the corner kick early and then we just couldn't seem to find the back of the net.

"We're still in control of our own destiny. We've got two left and we win those out, we win the region," Rumfallo said. "We're just going to focus on Brighton on Thursday." —
