Ever so gradually, the Viewmont Vikings volleyball team showed Wednesday that it had the potential to not only compete with host Skyline, but beat the Eagles in a non-region match.

The question was, however, would the match last long enough for that to happen?

It did, and the Vikes indeed beat passed Skyline, 16-25, 20-25, 30-28, 25-8, 15-8.

The key for Viewmont was the marathon third set.

"We haven't been pushed to where we've been up and then had that momentum shift — and that happened tonight," said Skyline coach Jami Hutchins. "It was clear as day when that momentum shift happened and I give every credit to Viewmont.

"That was a lesson for us, that we're not good enough to turn the switch on-and-off at will," Hutchins added.

Neither was Viewmont (6-5), at the beginning of the match, quick to turn the switch to the 'on' position.

It wasn't until sophomore Abi Jewett and senior Lillie Peterson started clicking that the Vikings were able to extricate themselves from a slow start. Jewett finished with eight kills and three blocks while Peterson had nine kills, many from the back row, and a block.

Another Viewmont contributor, middle Megan Carr, made a key block in the third set to tie the score at 27. That was followed by a Kensie Wood ace for the visitors, but Skyline (15-9) forced another deadlock on a kill by Cameron Mooney — the Eagles' leader with 15 kills.

But the Eagles committed hitting errors on the last two points of the third set and that trend only intensified over the last two sets as Viewmont rolled to easy wins in the fourth and fifth.

"We didn't really come out the first two sets, but we did the last three and that's all that really matters," Peterson said. "We just need to start a little faster."

Viewmont figures to be in a Region 2 battle with the likes of Davis, Layton and Syracuse for postseason berths.

"We have the potential to take region this year. We took second last year," Peterson said. "This year, we're definitely aiming for first." —
