Draper • If the Region 7 schedule plays out for the Corner Canyon volleyball team like the first week, it could be non-stop thrill ride for the Chargers.

And one that ends pleasingly.

Two days after beating Skyridge in five sets, Corner Canyon went the distance again against visiting Timpview Thursday night.

The Thunderbirds fought off three match points and the host Chargers staved off one before junior middle hitter Autumn Spafford's match-clinching kill gave Corner Canyon a 25-17, 18-25, 26-24, 22-25, 18-16 victory.

"We knew if we fought, we were going to win," said junior Emma Magnum, who had 14 kills and four blocks for the Chargers.

Magnum played a huge role in both of the home team's wins in sets three and five.

Out of her team's final six points in the third, Magnum accounted for four. In the final set, she had a block, two kills and an ace as Corner Canyon (6-3, 2-0) took a 13-9 lead.

But Timpview (5-2, 0-1), state runner-up in Class 4A last year, wasn't done.

The Thunderbirds, who got 16 kills from Jensyn Turner, averted the first match point at 14-11 on a kill by middle Grace Allen. Timpview tied the fifth set at 14 on a kill by hitter Selai Damani, who finished with 10 kills.

T-birds hitter Savannah Neves, who finished with 11 kills, gave the visitors their only match point at 16-15. But a kill by Zoe Tippetts and an ace by junior setter Seville Likes set up Spafford's match winner.

"We were trying to push through. We do a lot of practice for those last five points and that's why we're successful in that set five," Corner Canyon coach Mindy Wilder said. "We're building new traditions. Our program is building and we're just going to fight for everything."

Corner Canyon got off to a good start by reeling off 11 straight points in the opening set. Sophomore Madison Brunatti was behind the service line for that run, and finished with 15 kills and five aces.

Brunatti, Magnum and Likes were the Chargers' most effective players through most of the match. Tippetts, Spafford and middle Katie Beelek were instrumental in the last stretch.

"Everyone came together and that's just what we needed. We became a team," Wilder said.

Timpview played the match without head coach Kristen Bailey, who gave birth the day before, but assistant coach Rachel Jamison expressed similar views to her Corner Canyon counterpart after the thriller.

"We're trying to build that team chemistry and I think we did that tonight," Jamison said. "I think they're finally starting to trust each other and are really coming into their own." —
