Bountiful • On a night when offense was hard to come by, Viewmont's defense appeared to be unbreakable and the Vikings earned a hard-fought 13-0 victory over the Woods Cross Wildcats.

A week after a tough 17-14 overtime loss to Bountiful, Viewmont coach Scott Ditty was very pleased with how his team bounced back and got the win.

"We still have a lot to clean up but I thought our kids were really resilient. Our focus this week was being able to play with a little more discipline and eliminate penalties. Preseason is all about getting better, about learning, and a lot of our young kids grew up tonight," said Ditty.

The offense for both teams struggled for the majority of the first half. The first points of the game came with just over a minute left in the half when Viewmont kicker Preston Pitt converted a 20-yard field goal to give the Vikings a 3-0 advantage heading in to halftime.

The Wildcats coughed up the ball twice during the first half, giving the field possession advantage to the Eagles.

Woods Cross did not help its cause by committing 39 penalty yards on the half.

It was clear that the game plan in the second half for Viewmont was to run the ball as much as possible and keep the Wildcat's offense off of the field.

The Vikings were able to extend their lead when Pitt struck a 45 yard field goal to make it 6-0.

That remained the score until Viewmont pulled away for good on a 7-yard touchdown run up the middle by Cort Gibbs.

Ditty said that the key to the victory was very simple. When you do the little things right, the outcome more often than not will turn out in your favor.

"We practice hard and play hard. We are very young so we make sure that we understand our assignments. We work on fundamentals and do the things that win ballgames, and do them well."

Viewmont is now 2-1 on the early season while Woods Cross drops to 2-1. The Vikings will next play Davis High School while Woods Cross will travel to Bonneville.
