Matt Reynolds doubled home the tie-breaking run in the top of the eighth inning Friday, lifting Las Vegas to a 5-4 victory over Salt Lake. In front of 12,620 fans at Smith's Ballpark, the 51s snapped the Bees' two-game winning streak.
Turning Point • Las Vegas wiped out a 4-2 deficit with two unearned runs in the seventh. After consecutive errors by the Bees, Mets prospect Brandon Nimmo's two-run single tied the game, setting the stage for Reynolds one inning later.
Bees MVP • Salt Lake's Tim Arakawa entered the game hitting only .146, but he went 2-for-3 with a walk. He drove in two runs with a pair of two-out singles.
Hidden Hero • In the first Triple-A at-bat of his career, Salt Lake catcher Jose Birceno followed second-inning singles by Todd Cunningham and Forrestt Allday with a two-run double into the gap in left center.
Flashing Leather • With one out in the top of the fourth inning, T.J. Rivera lined a 1-1 pitch up the middle. Salt Lake pitcher Kyle McGowin threw his glove in front of his face, just time time to grab the ball for the out.
Quoteworthy • Referring to Salt Lake's two errors which fueled the 51s' comeback, Arakawa said, "That kind of stuff can't happen. … With a two-run lead like that, defense is pivotal."
Angel Angle • The Los Angeles Angels have recalled catcher Juan Graterol and left-handed pitcher Cody Edge. Graterol was also called up briefly in July but did not play before being returned to Salt Lake.
HISTORY LESSON • On Sept. 2, 1995, Denny Hocking's grand slam capped a five-run eighth inning that lifts the Salt Lake Buzz to an 8-5 victory at Colorado Springs. Hocking finishes with six RBIs.
What's next • Saturday night: Las Vegas (Darin Gorski, 5-4) vs. Salt Lake (Nate Smith, 8-8), 7:05 p.m. Radio: 1280 AM.
