Frisco, Texas • Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett says quarterback Tony Romo has a small fracture in his back.

On a conference call Saturday, Garrett said an MRI revealed the broken bone.

When asked if Romo would be back, Garrett wasn't specific on a timetable other than to say the quarterback would play this season.

The Cowboys open the season Sept. 11 at home against the New York Giants.

Romo, who has twice before had back surgery, got hurt when he took a hit on the third play of Thursday night's preseason game at Seattle. He didn't play anymore, and said afterward that he was OK.
