Morgan • The Morgan Trojans opened the 2016 season on Wednesday with a 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 25-21 victory over Sky View, its 33rd consecutive victory spanning two seasons.

It's a mostly different team from last year's 32-0 Class 3A state champion, but one main cog from the 2015 rotation, middle blocker Anna Cox, did her part with 14 kills and a pair of blocks.

Almost everyone else, though, were new faces.

"They push each other and they work really hard — and they want to win," Morgan coach Liz Wiscombe said. "There's a lot of tradition here and these kids come into the program, they step up and take somebody's place, and off we go."

After dropping the second set to the Bobcats, Morgan (1-0) took the third when Brookelyn Hurlbut scored her team's last three points with kills. Hurlbut finished with nine kills, part of an attack that included 10 kills from Baylee Loertscher as well as five kills and a pair of blocks by Marcie Stapley.

Holding a 23-21 lead in the fourth, the match went to the Trojans when Loertscher smacked a back row kill, which was followed by a Hurlbut putaway on a long pass by Sky View (1-1).

Ellie Anderson became the new regular setter for Morgan, and the sophomore admitted to some nerves.

"For sure," Anderson said. "Especially going in and high-fiving before the game, I think that's when I was most nervous. Once you get in, it all goes away after the first couple of points."

The first set was the worst for Sky View, which fell behind 18-5 at one point after a litany of serve-receive errors. But with the insertion of regular outside hitter Abby Harper and libero Kaitlin Compton, who didn't play in the opening set, the Bobcats bounced back in the second.

Sky View was led by senior right side hitter AveRee Knowles, who finished with 10 kills while registering a pair of blocks and three aces.

Harper ended with seven kills and three blocks.

The Bobcats, which swept Logan in their season opener, took the second set as outside hitter Dawson Day closed strong with two of their last three points.

"I thought there were things we did well, but things we definitely need to do better — especially against teams like Morgan," Sky View coach Malayna Knowles said. "Our play at the net, we were getting touches on blocks that were hurting us rather than helping us. We just need to make sure we clean up the blocking." —
