Draper • Pleasant Grove quarterback Jake Jensen spent a good portion of his first career start picking himself up off the ground Friday night, the effects of being sacked eight times.

But in the game's final second, as the sophomore got up one last time, he lifted his entire team up in celebration.

Jensen's 2-yard sneak beat the buzzer as the Vikings beat Corner Canyon, 19-16, in the season opener for both teams.

"I thought I was in … not even close," Jensen said of the winning play, which the officials huddled to discuss for about about 10 seconds before signaling touchdown. "We kept our composure, just stayed calm."

The score capped an 11-play, 76-yard drive, highlighted by a 22-yard pass to Kainoa Maldonado with 17.3 seconds left and a screen to Tai Kauwe on the next play to put the Vikings at the 1.

Jensen was stuffed on his first sneak attempt, but not the second, as the 6-foot-2, 210-pounder dodged to the right and across the goal line.

"It shows everyone in the state that we have a new coach, but we are coming back same as we were last year, coming out strong," Jensen said, referring to coach Mark Wootton.

It was a disappointing result for the Chargers, whose offense came alive in the second half and whose defense put forth an impressive opening night showing.

Junior defensive end Mikey Petty recorded five of Corner Canyon's eight sacks, and also broke up two passes. The Chargers' special teams forced a fumble and recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for their first score.

Quarterback Zach Wilson scrambled to keep a fourth-quarter drive alive and running back Jason Adams put the Chargers ahead 16-12 when he bounced a run outside with 2:33 to play for a touchdown.

The Chargers managed 14 yards total offense in a forgetful first half, but finished with 175 total yards for the game, 152 on the ground.

Pleasant Grove also won last year's meeting in the season opener, 28-19. —
