Springfield, N.J. • Daniel Summerhays shot an even-par 70 in round one of the 98th PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club, despite facing wind on every hole but the last.

"I played solid today, I drove it pretty well out there and I hit a number of decently solid iron shots, and I made a couple of nice putts," Summerhays said.

Summerhays trails leader Jimmy Walker by five shots.

"I think if you can stay within five shots the whole tournament, then you're doing pretty good," Summerhays said. "I don't know what the weather is supposed to be like but we'll take what comes and go get it."

Fellow former BYU golfer Zac Blair finished at 3-over and is tied for 103rd place.

Daniel Summerhays' cousin, Joe, made a birdie on the final hole to finish with a 6-over 76.

"I got in a rough patch and I couldn't stop making bogeys," Joe said. "I felt pretty good but I didn't hit enough fairways to score out here. But it was fun to make a birdie on the last."

Summerhays arrived to the course on Saturday and played a couple practice rounds with Daniel Summerhays to prepare for the tournament.

"That's a cool experience, to be able to hang out at a major championship with my cousin," Joe Summerhays said.

The two final Utahns at the major, Tommy Sharp and PGA Tour member Tony Finau, shot 7-over 77s.

Finau started with a 5-over 39 on the front and could not quite recover coming in as he closed with a 2-over 38.

"The course played tough, especially on the front nine," Finau said. "You don't see a par 5 for sixteen holes. When you get behind the eight-ball early like I did, you make those bogeys early on and it's tough to recover on this golf course."

Going into this major, Finau had finished in the top 20 in three of his other four major starts.

Joe Summerhays is the first of the Utahns out Friday, starting at 5 a.m. MDT, Finau goes out next at 5:40 a.m., Daniel Summerhays tees off at 6:40 a.m., Sharp at 10:25 a.m. and Blair at 12:15 pm.
