Las Vegas • The unwritten rule about summer league basketball is that no summer league basketball game should be allowed to go to overtime.

But the Utah Jazz's sudden-death 92-89 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday should be the exception, if only for the drama.

Not only was it exciting. Not only was it good basketball throughout. Atypical for summer league basketball, it featured a thrilling ending, when the Blazers' Pat Connaughton drilled a 3-pointer on the second possession of the second overtime to end the contest.

An NBA summer league rule stipulates that the second overtime period is settled by sudden death — the first team to score wins.

The Jazz ultimately fell to 1-2 in Las Vegas Summer League play at the Thomas & Mack Center. But they forced the double overtime when Trey Lyles tipped in Spencer Butterfield's missed free-throw at the overtime buzzer. Utah was simply one play away.

"We played well today, and it was fun stuff out there," Jazz coach Mike Wells said. "I thought there were some end of game situations that everyone can learn from. I thought guys made plays when they had to. I thought it was a fun game to be a part of, that's for sure."

Lyles continued his dominant summer, scoring a game-high 30 points and grabbing nine rebounds in 33 minutes. He was 10-of-20 from the field and shot 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. Still, he wasn't perfect, committing a couple of critical turnovers down the stretch.

Former Utah State star Spencer Butterfield was once again very good, scoring 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Marcus Paige added 11 points.

The Jazz had issues with Connaughton's shooting, and Portland forward C.J. Fair scored a team-high 20 points and had a major impact off the bench.

Now, the Jazz move on to tournament play. The opponent and time have yet to be determined, but they will almost certainly play a first round game on Wednesday.
