Utah teaching pros Joe Summerhays and Tommy Sharp will play in the PGA Championship in late July, thanks to their strong finishes Wednesday in the PGA Professional Championship for club pros at Verona, N.Y.

The Utahns each started the final round in a tie for 21st place, but moved comfortably into the top 20 to earn their berths in the July 28-31 event at Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey.

Summerhays, a former BYU golfer and a cousin of PGA Tour member Daniel Summerhays, shot 75-70-70-69 for a total of 4-under-par 284 and tied for 10th place. He made five birdies and two bogeys in the final round at Turning Stone Resort.

Sharp, the 2003 State Amateur champion, posted 74-69-72-70 to finish 12th at 3 under. He carded three birdies and one bogey Wednesday.

Formerly a head professional at Glen Eagle Golf Course in Syracuse, Summerhays teaches at Oakridge Country Club in Farmington. Sharp works at the Golf Lab teaching facility in Salt Lake City.

Lehi resident Tony Finau is officially in the PGA Championship field. Daniel Summerhays, of Fruit Heights, will be added to the field as one of the PGA Tour's top 70 money-winners between last July and this July.

Joe Summerhays' father, Bruce, is a longtime PGA professional. He played in four PGA Championships as a club pro and in several senior major tournaments as a Champions Tour player.

"I haven't done anything that big yet, so it's super exciting to get the opportunity to play in a major," Joe Summerhays said in a Golf Channel interview.
