Salt Lake starting pitcher Blayne Weller's lack of command was exposed in the third inning as Las Vegas erupted for six runs on five hits, sending a total of 11 batters to the plate in the frame. The inning was capped by a three-run line drive blast off the bat of Gavin Cecchini that exited Smith's Ballpark in a hurry. The Bees would never recover, losing 8-1.

Turning Point • The 51's had sent four batters to the plate and netted three runs before the Bees were able to record an out in the third. Former New York Mets catcher Travis D'Arnaud recorded a bases-clearing double to begin the rout.

Bees MVP • On a night in which Bees highlights were few and far between, designated hitter Rafael Ortega extended his hitting streak to seven games on a double to center. Ortega scored the Bees lone run of the evening on a sacrifice fly from third baseman Sherman Johnson.

Hidden Hero • Featuring a blazing fastball that hits the upper 90s with regularity, relief pitcher Jose Valdez pitched a perfect sixth and seventh innings, striking out two in the process.

Flashing Leather • In the ninth, third baseman Sherman Johnson made a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch into the stands on a ball hit by D'Arnaud. Johnson immediately threw to second, nearly picking off Monell, who had led off the inning with a double.

Quoteworthy • "When you get down six runs it kind of deflates you a little bit," acting manager Ty Boynkin said. "But you have to keep plugging away and fight through it."

Angel Angle • Shortstop Brendan Ryan was designated for assignment to Salt Lake after posting just one hit in 13 at bats for the Angels this season. The former New York Yankee went 0-3 at the plate with a walk in his Bees debut.

History Lesson • On June 19, 1996, Brent Brede leads off the bottom of the 11th with a home run to give the Buzz a 4-3 win over Tucson. Damian Miller had tied the game for Salt Lake with a solo shot in the bottom of the ninth.

What's next • Salt Lake Bees Nate Smith (4-2, 4.35) vs. Las Vegas 51's Rafael Montero (2-4, 5.82), Monday, June 20, 7:05 p.m., at Smith's Ballpark. —
