Denver • Charlie Blackmon hit a tiebreaking solo homer off the foul pole in the fifth and Tyler Chatwood effectively threw into the seventh, lifting the Colorado Rockies to a 5-3 win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday.

Carlos Gonzalez had a three-run homer in the first and an RBI single in the fifth to power the Rockies.

Relying on an efficient sinker, Chatwood (8-4) found his groove at Coors Field after being so dominant in road starts. He threw 6 2-3 strong innings and allowed three runs. He's been stellar away from Denver with a major league-best 0.65 road ERA.

Flamethrower Carlos Estevez earned his first career save with an electric ninth after Jason Motte struggled to begin the inning.

Erik Johnson (0-1) went 4 2-3 innings and gave up five runs in his Padres debut. He was acquired last weekend in a deal that sent righty James Shields to the Chicago White Sox.

Chatwood kept the ball low all afternoon, forcing the Padres into 14 ground outs and no fly outs. He was taken out in the seventh after allowing a two-out single to Derek Norris in a 5-3 game.

This time, the bullpen made the lead hold up a night after Jake McGee blew a save in the ninth by allowing a three-run homer to Wil Myers.

It wasn't easy, though.

Boone Logan finished the seventh and got two outs in the eighth before turning it over to Motte, who retired Myers on a pop up.

Motte surrendered a double to Matt Kemp and hit pinch hitter Brett Wallace to start the ninth. Estevez was summoned from the bullpen as the song "Wild Thing" blared throughout the stadium.

Estevez enticed a fly out and a pop up. Travis Jankowski entered as a pinch runner and was thrown out at second trying to steal to end the game.

This may have gone a long way in securing the closer's role for Estevez with McGee going on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because of a sore left knee.

Both pitchers started out rocky, with Chatwood allowing two runs in the first and Johnson surrendering a three-run homer to Gonzalez.

The Padres tied the game at 3 in the fifth with a two-out RBI single from Jon Jay.

In the bottom of the inning, Blackmon lined a shot off the foul pole for his seventh homer of the season. Gonzalez tacked on an insurance run with a bloop RBI single.
