Art Briles is the latest college football coach to lose his job in the summer or spring because of a scandal.
The timing is terrible for Baylor, and history suggests teams that make a coaching change at this time of year do not play particularly well in the fall.
Illinois 2015 — Tim Beckman was fired Aug. 28, a week before the season started, after an internal investigation by the school found he mistreated injured players.
Interim coach: Offensive coordinator Bill Cubit was promoted, given a two-year contract after the season and then fired in March by Illinois' new athletic director.
Season record: 5-7.
Next coach: Lovie Smith.
Arkansas 2012 — Bobby Petrino was fired April 10 after he was involved in a motorcycle crash a few days earlier that involved a woman who was riding with him. It was determined Petrino misled his boss about the accident and his relationship with the woman, a member of the football staff with whom he was having an affair.
Interim coach: John L. Smith was promoted from special teams coordinator, given a 10-month contract and not retained when the season ended.
Season record: 4-8.
Next coach: Bret Bielema is 18-20 in three seasons at Arkansas.
Ohio State 2011 — Jim Tressel was forced to resign May 30 after he was found to have lied to NCAA investigators and school officials during an investigation about players trading memorabilia, equipment and autographs for tattoos from a local business.
Interim coach: Luke Fickell was promoted from defensive coordinator and the university did not call him an interim coach — but he was.
Season record: 6-7.
Next coach: Urban Meyer is 50-4 with a national championship in four seasons at Ohio State.
North Carolina 2011 — Butch Davis was fired on July 27 during an NCAA investigation into academic misconduct and players receiving improper benefits from agents.
Interim coach: Everett Withers was promoted from defensive coordinator.
Season record: 7-6.
Next coach: Larry Fedora is 32-20 in four seasons at North Carolina.
Alabama 2003 — Mike Price was fired May 3 four months after reports that the night before a golf tournament in Pensacola, Florida, he was partying and drinking at a strip club and had about $1,000 in food and drink charged to his hotel bill by a woman staying in his room.
Next coach: Instead of hiring an interim coach, Alabama hired former Crimson Tide player Mike Shula as the permanent coach. Shula went 26-23 in four seasons.
Season record: 4-9.
