David Washington homered twice, Memphis survived a wild ninth inning Wednesday night and the Redbirds defeated Salt Lake, 9-7. In front of 4,465 fans at Smith's Ballpark, the Bees had a nine-game home winning streak snapped.
Turning Point • Salt Lake scored four times and had the winning runs on base when Juan Gaterol batted in the ninth. He flied out to left field, however, to end the game.
Bees MVP • First baseman Jefry Marte singled, doubled, walked and was hit by a pitch in three official at-bats. In the third inning, he drove in one run and scored another to help the Bees narrow the five-run deficit.
Hidden Hero • Centerfielder Quintin Berry went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. In the opening three games of the Memphis series, he is 7-for-12 with four RBIs. He has scored four runs.
Flashing Leather • In the top of the first inning, Salt Lake shortstop Ryan Jackson made a leaping catch on Patrick Wisdom's line drive and threw to first in time to double Charlie Tilson off first base.
Quoteworthy • Regarding the Bees' ninth-inning rally, manager Keith Johnson said, "For them to not give away any at-bats and to scrape, scratch and claw like that … is a tribute to the guys and the way they've gone about their business all year."
Angel Angle • The Angels have recalled infielder Kaleb Cowart, who was hitting .303 with a team-high 27 RBIs. The Bees activated infielder Angelo Amendolare.
History lesson • On May 25, 1994, left-hander Eddie Guardado pitched a two-hit complete game and the Salt Lake Buzz defeated Tucson, 9-3.
