The University of Utah baseball team overcame an early three-run deficit, then had to rally again late to defeat California 6-5 Monday at Berkeley.

The Utes, who lead the Pac-12 with a 17-10 record, improved to 23-26 overall. Cal fell to 30-20, 12-14.

After the Utes had given up the lead in the bottom of the eighth, Kody Davis smashed a two-run double in the top of the ninth, scoring Kelly Ellis and Hunter Simmons for a 6-5 Utah lead that reliever Dylan Drachler made stand up.

Josh Lapiana earned the win for Utah, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits and a walk in his six innings. He struck out six.

The Golden Bears scored twice in the first inning and once in the fifth for a 3-0 lead. But Utah tied the score with a three-run sixth inning.

The Utes then took a 4-3 lead with a run in the top of the eighth, but Cal came back with two in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead, 5-4.

The Utes won the series, taking two of the three games. Utah won the opener 8-3, then lost Game 2 Sunday, 9-2.
