Utah's tough-luck tight end is getting one more shot this fall.

The NCAA approved senior Evan Moeai's request for a fifth year of eligibility, and he will be able to play for the Utes this fall.

The Mountain View alum had been waiting for NCAA approval since September, when he suffered a season-ending leg injury on the first catch of the first series against Michigan, Utah's first game of the year. Coach Kyle Whittingham had consistently referenced since last fall Moeai as a "slam-dunk" case for a medical hardship waiver, but the Utes finally received word Monday that he could return.

Moeai is coming off his second season-ending injury in as many seasons. In 2014, he tore his meniscus and fractured a bone in his leg in the season opener against Idaho State.

Since transferring from Snow College in 2013, Moeai has played in only five games as a Ute. But he's considered one of Utah's top tight ends headed into the fall, along with fellow senior Siale Fakailoatonga and junior Harrison Handley.

Like Moeai, Fakailoatonga also is coming off a season-ending injury — the two began last season as co-starters.

Of the group, Handley returns the most production after catching 21 passes for 286 yards and four touchdowns.

Moeai's return is a blessing for some of the more fashion-conscious Utes: Along with Fakailoatonga, he's regarded as one of the most talented barbers on the team.

Weight room gets an upgrade

Those following Utah football on social media last week may have seen the Alex Smith Weight and Conditioning Center get shipments of equipment.

According to strength and conditioning coach Doug Elisaia, it's a standard refitting of new weight racks and plates. While the football facility opened in 2013, the weight equipment outdated the building and was ready to be replaced. The Utes have also tweaked the layout of the weight room so Elisaia can see all of his players lifting at once.

The spring break is almost over for the Utes, who begin summer conditioning next Tuesday after Memorial Day.
