Columbia, Mo. • It wasn't the way BYU wanted to open its 12th straight appearance in the NCAA softball tournament. Missouri stomped on the Cougars, 9-0, in a game shortened to five innings because of the run rule at University Field.

The MU Tigers (40-14) scored a run in the first, then exploded for six runs in the second inning to widen the margin. Amanda Sanchez provided the big blow off BYU starter McKenna Bull with a grand slam homer. MU starter Paige Lowary limited the Cougars to two hits in the shutout.

As a result of the loss, BYU (35-20) drops into loser's bracket to play Louisville (35-16) at 4:30 MDT on Friday. The Cardinals lost earlier in day, 3-2, against Nebraska. —
