Brighton's Chase Stoner and Lone Peak's Brocton Andrus set up a semifinal battle in the Class 5A boys' state tennis tournament.

In the opening rounds of the 1st singles competition, the players pushed through two matches each Thursday at Liberty Park.

Stoner beat Herriman's Josh Aughenbaugh 6-2, 6-4 and then Mountain Crest's Scott Johnson 6-0, 6-1. Andrus' path to the semis included a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Copper Hills' Trinh Tran and a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the quarters over Sam Hafen from Davis.

The other semifinal match on Saturday morning will pit players who were in the 2nd singles bracket a year ago. Pleasant Grove's Ty Harris beat Bingham's Nathan Balls and Northridge's Ben Graff while Viemont's Jack Harris earned his spot with wins over Roy's Vittorio Venturoli and Lehi's Tyler Miller.

The battle for the team championship is settling into a three-way affair between defending champ Brighton, Lone Peak and Viewmont.

Brighton and Lone Peak, each with 10 points, had their entries in the remaining categories — 2nd singles, 3rd singles, 1st doubles, 2nd doubles — advance to the semifinals. Viewmont, one point behind, failed only in 1st doubles to send advance its entry.
